Overview

Circular fashion is at the heart of Alter Eco, a talent competition devised by This Way Next as a platform through which our client, Goldsmith Vintage, can directly connect with fashion students.
The ingredients are simple; 200kg of vintage deadstock (secondhand clothing that would otherwise not be sold); 250 budding fashion students; 4 months to design and create original garments.  From ideating the concept to getting university partners on board through to securing judges, This Way Next took care of delivery end to end.

Outcomes

The 2022 installment of the competition attracted entrants from top universities including Kingston School of Art, Middlesex, Central Saint Martins and Salford.  Students were tasked with creating an original garment using only 1.5kg of hand selected vintage deadstock and thread - and strictly no extra embellishments.
Marked on originality, commerciality and quality of execution, submissions were whittled down to a shortlist of 30 designs to be judged by an expert panel: double BAFTA award winner PC Williams, Fashion Designer and Sustainability Consultant Patrick McDowell, author Lauren Bravo and vintage loving fashion editor, Joy Montgomery.
